Facing its more famous partner across the Guanabara Bay, the city of Niteroi hostes a vibrant fish Market with one key added allure: you can eat your “catch” in there.

"Mercado São Pedro", responsible for 80% of all fresh fish consumed in Rio's metropolitan area. "Cariocas" and the most acclaimed Rio's chefs come here every morning shopping for the best "catch of day"!

For foddies and hunters of Brazil’s more authentic side, a trip to the daily São Pedro fish Market provides na excelente opportunity for a culinary adventure off the beaten tourist path.

Stall displaying a huge array of fresh fish line both sides of of tile-covered hall, the air filled with the throaty calls of seasoned fishmongers.

The prices are definitely attractive, specially when compared with Rio’s neighborhood Market, and, the quality and variety of fish on display are also outstanding.

On most days, sharks, tuna, corvina, Octopus, sardine, salmon, shrimp and lobsters are some of delights sitting on ice for a buyer.

On the ground floor, in nearly fourty booths, fishermen sell their production; on the second floor, eight restaurants prepare famous recipes.

You can also buy your own fish and have it prepared - specially for you - buy your own fish and have it prepared - specially for you - at one the restaurants upstairs (at an agreed fee).

To reach the second floor, go to the end of the hall, beside the shrine to San Peter, the patron of fishermen, there’s a staircase that leads up to this amazing and delicious fish place!

The Market is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 6 am to 6 pm; Sundays it closes at 12 pm.
